CAROLYN BLOHM // The Art of Contingency

The Art of Contingency

My series of large-scale photographic abstracts consists of digital combinations of multiple photographs from my personal collection.  I utilize a specific series of actions in Photoshop to come to the final visual outcome.  I never know how the image will turn out; I trust the process, experimenting with various techniques, producing many unexpected surprises.

I take inspiration from the composer John Cage, who utilizes chance operations to compose his pieces.  Regarding meaning, he once stated,“I found that when I wrote a very sad piece people were as apt to laugh as they were to be moved.  So I gave up the notion of communication as impractical in my case.” Similarly, I do not want to assign any meaning to my images.  I instead want the viewer to determine the meaning for themselves, immersing themselves in the visual playground of color before them.
