Artist Statement

My series is based around comfort. As it was something drastically uncomfortable for me to do, I made it a goal of mine to listen to my subjects and portray them as they wished to be seen in places they love.

The idea to portray Detroiters with smiles as they showed off a place they were proud of came to me while having a conversation with a friend about how Detroiters are thought to have rough cold exteriors. I began to think of my many out of town friends that had similar beliefs and set out to create this series to prove that those ideas were indeed misconceptions.

My ultimate goal is to contribute to a greater dialogue that needs to be had - to spread understanding and knowledge so individuals leave with thoughts of understanding and a sense of feeling connected to the places and people shown.
